The path to wellness is continually shifting for each of us from one moment to the next. Health is not a destination, but a state of balance that must constantly be renegotiated. What is needed to achieve that balance changes from day to day. Our bodies are always trying to communicate those needs to us. All we have to do is learn how to listen.
Over the last decade, I have learned that our bodies speak to us in different ways, and sometimes pain can be a cry for help. Our bodies hold all that we are, and they store joy and fear, worry and wonder, stress and tension, as well as a longing for peace and comfort. Most importantly, our bodies function as an interrelated system, and our parts are always in communication with each other. When one part of our body gets ‘stuck,’ other parts get recruited to help out, and over time that can lead to a state of imbalance and discomfort.
A pain in the arm or shoulder may be connected to tension in the low back. A stiff neck might stem from a tight calf muscle. Physical discomfort can also signal the need for a deeper release. Softening a knot in a muscle might stir up and release memories or emotions that have been stored in that part of the body.
Tuning in and seeking support can help us unwind the holding patterns we develop in response to emotional and physical pain. And the more often we tune in and seek relief, the more often our bodies have an opportunity to let go of those layers and move toward a state of balance.
Massage therapy is one way to tune in and let your body know you are listening. If you have chronic issues, it may take several sessions to work through the layers and address the underlying problems, but even one session can provide relief.
